Turn Searches Into Sales: The Power of SEO on Amazon

When it comes to selling products on Amazon, great copy is about more than just describing what a product does. Your product title, item highlight, bullet points, product description and backend keywords all play an important role in helping customers discover your product; this is where SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) becomes essential.
Every day, shoppers type specific words and phrases into Amazon to find what they want to buy. If your listing doesn't use the same language that your customers are searching for, your product may struggle to be shown to the right audience.
What Is SEO on Amazon?
Amazon SEO is the process of optimising and refining your product listing so that it has a better chance of appearing organically when shoppers search for relevant keywords.
Unlike Google SEO, Amazon SEO is focused on helping customers find products that they are likely to purchase. Amazon's search algorithm considers factors such as keyword relevance, sales performance, conversion rate and customer behaviour when determining which products to show.
This means that effective Amazon copy needs to achieve two things at once; include relevant search terms to boost the product's visibility, and actually persuade the customer to buy.
Why Are Keywords Important?
Keywords are the words and phrases customers use when searching for products.
For example, someone looking for a reusable water bottle might search for "stainless steel water bottle", "insulated water bottle" or "leakproof water bottle".
Including relevant phrases naturally within your listings can help Amazon understand what your product is and which searches it may be relevant to.
However, SEO isn't about simply adding as many keywords as possible. Keyword stuffing can make copy difficult to read and may actually damage the customer experience, as they are unable to learn about the product. When keywords are forced into every sentence, the writing can sound repetitive, unnatural and feel SEO focused, rather than focused on the potential customers needs. Good copy incorporates significant keywords naturally, while remaining clear, engaging and persuasive.
SEO and Product Titles
Your product title is one of the most important areas of your listing.
A strong title should quickly communicate:
• What the product is.
• The key benefit or feature.
• The brand.
• Relevant specifications.
• Important keywords.
For example, instead of writing:
"Premium Bottle – Great for Everyday Use"
a more SEO-focused title might be:
"Stainless Steel Insulated Water Bottle – Leakproof Reusable Flask for Work, Gym & Travel"
The second example gives more information about the product while also providing the customer with a frame of reference for their own life; suggesting how the product might fit into their daily routines, helping add context to the item and allowing the customer to imagine owning it.
Optimising Bullet Points
Listing bullet points are another valuable opportunity to combine SEO with persuasive copywriting.
Rather than simply listing features, focus on features and benefits, again in order to add context to the product and allow customers to see themselves owning/using the item.
A weak example of copy:
"Double-wall stainless steel construction."
A better example:
"Double-wall stainless steel construction – keeps your drinks cold for hours while preventing condensation on your desk or bag."
An even better example, making use of the 500 characters allowed, language that directly addresses the audience, lifestyle context that allows the customer to imagine using the product, and includes keywords for linked/similar items:
'One Bottle, Every Lifestyle - The perfect addition to your work, gym or travel bag, this double walled stainless steel water bottle is ideal for use on the go. No matter what your day throws at you, keep your drinks ice cold and ready to go. Whether it's a refreshing electrolyte drink to boost performance at the gym, a smooth iced latte for a quick afternoon pick me up, or simply just chilled water for an instant hydration kick, this bottle has you, and your drink, covered,'
Bullet points should answer the questions customers are likely to have and demonstrate why your product is worth buying over others, allow customers to imagine the product in their own daily lives, and address the specific frustrations that drove the customer to search for a solution; your product.
Don't Forget About Conversion
SEO can help customers find your product, but getting seen is only part of the challenge; once a shopper lands on your listing, your copy needs to convince them to stay and ultimately purchase. To do this, your Amazon SEO and copywriting should work together.
A listing packed with keywords but written poorly may attract visitors but fail to convert them. On the other hand, beautifully written copy that doesn't contain the language customers are searching for may struggle to get visibility.
The goal is to create SEO-friendly copy that still sounds natural and speaks directly to your target customer.
Backend Keywords
Amazon also provides search-term fields within it's backend that allow sellers to provide additional relevant keywords without displaying them prominently to customers.
These can be useful for covering relevant search variations, alternative phrases and terminology that may not fit naturally into the visible copy.
However, sellers should still prioritise relevance. Adding unrelated keywords simply because they have high search volume isn't an effective long-term strategy, as shoppers searching for a backpack will immediately click away if a water bottle appears, wasting spend and indicating that your product is irrelevant to Amazon's own algorithm.
By using relevant keywords throughout your title, bullet points, description and backend search terms, you can improve your product's visibility and reach more relevant shoppers.
The most successful Amazon copy strikes a balance between searchability and persuasion. It uses the language customers are searching for while clearly communicating the product's benefits and encouraging them to buy.
In other words, don't write for the algorithm alone. Write for the customer, optimise for Amazon, and make every word work towards the sale.
