Why Catalogue Auditing Matters

When we take on a new Amazon catalogue, we do not start with optimisation. We start with a deep audit. Most brands do not realise how many hidden issues sit inside their listings until visibility drops or sales stall. Our job is to surface those problems, fix them and put the catalogue on a stronger foundation for growth. Here is how we approach a catalogue audit in practice.
Finding Suppressed and Inactive Listings
The first thing we check is what Amazon has already flagged. Suppressed or inactive listings do not show in search, which means they cannot generate organic sales no matter how good the
product is.
We go into Seller Central or Vendor Central and pull the full list of inactive and suppressed ASINs. We then look at the reason codes Amazon provides, which usually point to missing required information, non-compliant main images, missing brand or manufacturer fields, or an incorrect category. We export this into a working file and treat it as the priority list. These are the listings that are completely invisible until fixed, so they always come first.
Duplicates and Broken Variations
Duplicate ASINs are a quiet drain on performance. They split reviews, dilute relevance and make advertising and reporting messy. Variations that are not set up correctly can confuse customers and suppress visibility for specific child ASINs. We search the catalogue by product name, EAN or UPC, to find multiple ASINs for the same product.
We also review variation families to make sure child ASINs match the parent in title, image and attributes.
Where we find duplicates, we recommend merging or closing them and consolidating traffic onto the correct ASIN. For variations, we check that the right products are grouped together and that each child displays the correct image and attributes on the detail page.
Checking Attribute Completeness
Even when a listing is live, it can underperform if key attributes are missing. Amazon uses this structured data to match products to searches and to power filters on the left-hand side of search results.
We review product type, subcategory, brand, manufacturer, material composition, size, colour, flavour, scent and any other relevant variant attributes. We also check that bullet points and descriptions are present and meaningful.
A useful signal is conversion rate. We sort active listings by unit session percentage and look at the bottom performers. When we cross-reference these with attribute completeness, we often find that listings with missing or incomplete attributes have lower relevance for long-tail searches.
We prioritise fixing attributes on top-selling or strategically important ASINs first. In many catalogues, a significant portion of listings have some degree of attribute incompleteness that is costing visibility.
Auditing Images for Compliance and Quality
Images are one of the most common causes of suppression and lost visibility. Amazon’s automated image checks have become stricter, and even small deviations from the rules can trigger flags.
We start with the main image. We check that the background is pure white, because off-white or tinted backgrounds are a frequent cause of suppression. We verify that the product fills at least 85% of the frame and that there is no text, logos, watermarks, or promotional graphics on the main image. We also confirm that the image shows the product only, with no props or packaging unless they are included in the sale.
Common issues we see include off-white or cream backgrounds, graphics on the main image, products that are too small in the frame, low-resolution images that disable zoom and variation mismatch where the image does not match the selected child ASIN.
We fix non-compliant images by uploading fresh, fully compliant assets rather than lightly edited versions of the rejected file. After updates, we allow 24–48 hours for reinstatement and re-indexing.
Reviewing Titles, Bullet Points and Descriptions
Once the structural issues are resolved, we review the customer-facing content. Poorly written or inconsistent copy can limit both SEO and conversion.
We look for titles that are too short, keyword-stuffed, or missing key information such as brand, product type, size, or flavour. We check for bullet points that list features instead of benefits, or that repeat the same information. We review descriptions that are generic, supplier-led, or do not reflect the brand voice. We also look for inconsistencies between title, bullets, description, and A+ Content.
For SEO, we ensure that primary keywords appear naturally in the title and bullets, secondary keywords are included where relevant without harming readability, and backend search terms are used to capture additional queries without cluttering visible content.
Turning the Audit into an Ongoing Process
A one-off audit is valuable, but ongoing checks prevent problems from building up again.
We set up monthly checks for suppressed and inactive listings and quarterly catalogue audits to review attributes, duplicates and image compliance. We use the Listing Quality Dashboard or equivalent to monitor reason codes and trends over time. We also track key metrics such as suppressed listing count, attribute completeness, and image compliance.
We document findings in a simple spreadsheet or dashboard, tagging each issue by type such as image, attribute, duplicate, or suppression and by priority. This makes it easier to brief internal teams or external partners and to measure progress over time.
Why This Matters
Hidden catalogue problems are often invisible until they start affecting sales. By systematically auditing suppressed listings, duplicates, missing attributes, and image compliance, we can restore visibility, improve conversion, and create a stronger foundation for SEO and advertising.
For brands managing large or complex catalogues, this kind of audit is one of the highest-ROI activities we run. It turns a messy, reactive catalogue into a clean, growth-ready asset.
